Job Description

Principal Technical Manager
One of the UK's leading providers of building services, mechanical, electrical and engineering solutions, they provide a broad range of high quality engineering and contracting services for public sector and private customers in commercial and industrial markets.

Their skills include project management, design, prefabrication and offsite manufacture, supply, installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance.

The company serves commercial, defence, education, health, industrial, infrastructure, public building, retail, scientific, sport and leisure markets. They employ over 3,750 staff through a network of offices at over 20 locations, throughout the UK.

The role of Principal Technical Manager for this national building services contractor has been designed to work alongside the Chief Engineer. The role is to provide a technical support service covering all mechanical (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and/or electrical (lighting, security, power distribution) construction disciplines. The support will be provided on projects from original inception through to completion.

They will have responsibility to lead and develop the Technical support team and its constituent parts within the branches to successfully achieve company, team and individual goals and objectives relating to the standardisation of technical practices and procedures throughout the company. They will also have to take overall responsibility for all aspects of mechanical building services / electrical work performed by this contractor on projects, including the work of sub-contractors to specialist consultants. This will include the development of a list of approved designers and consultants, identifying their core technical competencies.

The role will encompass recruitment responsibilities to maintain the level of technical staff within the company through effective recruitment processes, and also managing the design authorisation system. By conducting regular independent reviews and audits of both internal and external designs, they will produce concise reports to identify the findings and make suitable recommendations to appropriate management. They will also evaluate new products/systems/design software, and make appropriate recommendations to senior management on the introduction of new technical processes that would benefit the business.

Qualifications/Skills Required

To perform the Principal Technical Manager role for this building services contractor, relevant technical management experience within the building services environment is important. A candidate will be educated to degree level in a relevant building services qualification. They will also posses excellent communication abilities with a common sense and flexible approach.

The core competencies of applicants should include strong experience and skills in business planning, design knowledge, CAD systems and awareness, quality control, up-to-date and relevant technical building services skills and awareness of technical legislation and regulations. They will have also obtained good health and safety knowledge and experience in report writing, training and facilitation of technical building services skills and IT skills.

Applicants must be able to show excellent entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen and skills in planning and organisation, problem solving and decision making, communication, teamwork, leadership, empowerment, development and continuous improvement.

There are three Principal Technical Manager positions available, based in Newcastle, Wynyard and Manchester. The salary is negotiable and will be complemented with an excellent benefits package.
