Job Description

Ship Assembly Lead Structural Engineer
The Ship Assembly Lead Structural Engineer will report to the Delegated Design Authority for Hull Structure. The primary role of the Ship Assembly Lead Structural Engineer is to co-ordinate the development of engineering arrangements for handling of the Main Assembly Blocks both after completion at the Build Yards and during assembly at the Integration yard.

Specific Duties:-

Establish a single set of consistent design standards for assembly block lifting / handling across all build sites, with buy-in from all yards at which operations will take place.
Agree not-to-be-exceeded weights for hull structure and outfit content of each assembly block and ensure these assumptions are recorded, communicated and managed.
Manage a team of structural engineers to develop lifting arrangement solutions for upper blocks and docking arrangements for lower blocks, liaising with external lifting specialists and build yard production engineers to ensure that designs are efficient and compatible with build assembly operations and yard facilities.
Identify requirements for temporary and permanent structure to support assembly blocks during lifting operations.
Develop hotwork completion and NDE requirements of structure in way of assembly block lifting points.
Provide information on permanent structural enhancements to the Stage 2 teams in a timely manner in support of Stage 2 schedules.
Conduct impact assessments to ensure assembly block handling arrangements are not subsequently compromised by changes to the ship's structural design or the build strategy.
Identify and manage risks associated with upper block lifting and lower block docking.
Arrange peer review of assembly block lifting arrangements with an independent expert / authority.
Jointly agree and "sign-off" assembly block lifting arrangements with representatives from each of the build yards.
Co-ordinate regular technical meetings with build yard engineers, managers, external lifting and transportation specialists and Structures DDA and or Deputy.
Attend meetings on any ACA and second tier supplier sites as required.

Responsibilities:-

Responsibilities for assembly block handling in a project involving a number of different sites and commercial entities is potentially a complex matter and clarity and communication of responsibilities are therefore of great importance.

The Ship Assembly Lead Structural Engineer is responsible to the Hull Structure Delegated Design Authority at a project-wide level for ensuring that the structural integrity of assembly blocks and the partially completed ship during the assembly process is maintained. However, it should be noted that the individual build yards and the integration yard in which the operations will take place are ultimately responsible for the safety of handling operations on their own sites. As such the individual shipyard Build Engineering representatives will have a "dotted line" of responsibility to the Ship Assembly Lead Structural Engineer to ensure consistent and "best for project" solutions are developed.

Transportation arrangements and the safety of assembly blocks during transit between yards are the responsibility of the Transportation Team and their sub-contractor and as such regular contact should be maintained with this team.

The Ship Assembly Lead Structural Engineer is to develop and own a clear process for design review, audit, sign-off and release of assembly block handling arrangements.

Requirement:-

The requirements for this role are as follows:
Experience in a shipyard environment interfacing with production teams.
Experience of block / unit handling engineering (lifting / turning / docking / transfer).
Qualified structural engineer or equivalent (i.e. naval architecture).
Ability to work pro-actively to collate data and solve problems.
Ability to build working relationships and create a team spirit across company boundaries.
This role is required up to 2nd ship structural completion, and may be based on any of the five main IP sites (Bristol, Barrow, Glasgow, Rosyth or Portsmouth).
Frequent travel to other sites is to be expected.

Qualifications/Skills Required

Experience in a shipyard environment interfacing with production teams.
Experience of block / unit handling engineering (lifting / turning / docking / transfer).
Qualified structural engineer or equivalent (i.e. naval architecture).

Please note: Applications will not be considered from those candidates who are not entitled to work within the UK or the country of the advertised vacancy.
